1961 FREEDOM RIDES EXHIBIT

The first in a series of exhibits about the 1961 Freedom Rides is to be unveiled with an anniversary program following at 3 PM at First Baptist Church, 347 North Ripley Street. These rides marked a turning point in the civil rights movement. The goal was to compel the U.S. Government to enforce Supreme Court decisions outlawing segregated transportation seating & facilities.

Small American flags will have been placed at every military gravesite in the cemetery. The program includes a Color Guard, Veterans firing squad, band & bugler as part of the ceremony. Civic & local organizations are invited to bring wreathes & their organizational colors for the ceremony. Patriotic music will be performed before the program begins.
