Tour Raises Awareness of Alabama Native Keller’s Legacy to Save Sight, Speech and Hearing. The Huntsville Museum of Art is the first stop on a statewide tour for a new exhibit featuring a statue portraying the dramatic moment that Helen Keller was liberated from the “double dungeon of darkness and silence.” The exhibit was designed to raise awareness of Helen Keller and the Foundations that carry on her work – the Helen Keller Birthplace Foundation and the Helen Keller Foundation for Research and Education.

The Christian Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses (CCJW) announced that Huntsville will host three conventions this summer. The CCJW conventions are scheduled to be held June 25-27, July 2-4 and July 9-11. Each convention is expected to attract up to 6,000 attendees to North Alabama for the three-day event. The estimated economic impact is substantial. Each of the three weekends will bring in an estimated $2.5 million for a total impact of $7.5 million.

Washington, D.C. (February 3, 2010)—Today, the National Trust for Historic Preservation named Huntsville, Alabama, one of its 2010 Dozen Distinctive Destinations. Huntsville, nominated by the Huntsville/Madison County Convention & Visitors Bureau, was selected for its diligent efforts to protect and share the City’s heritage, which ranges from deep southern roots to space exploration, and for its remarkable leadership in sustainability, serving as a role model for cities across America. Huntsville is the first town in Alabama to be named a Distinctive Destination. In the month of February, Huntsville will be participating in the first-ever public online voting contest for the 2010 Dozen Distinctive Destinations Fan Favorite.

Sci-Quest, Hands-on Science Center is now registering for its Spring Break Camps, March 15-19. Camps offer children ages Kindergarten through ninth-grade an informal and hands-on learning experience in subjects such as the solar system, medieval science and 3D computer modeling.

More than 200 Great Alabama Homecoming Celebrations are featured in tourism’s 2010 Vacation Guide. Participating cities and towns will hold festivals, tours, and other events including the unveiling of historic markers as part of The Year of Alabama Small Towns and Downtowns.
