Madison History Association invites you to hear John Rankin, author of Memories of Madison, among many other publications.

John Patrick Rankin moved to Madison from California in 1986. He has spent almost three decades researching the history of the town of Madison and its area pioneers while participating in various projects with the Madison Station Historical Preservation Society. During this time, he also volunteered with the Army on Redstone Arsenal to document the history of its land pioneers, and he prepared extensive reports on the cemeteries in the Madison and Redstone Arsenal area. For five years he wrote the weekly column “Vintage Vignettes” for the Huntsville Times newspaper telling of Madison-area early settlers. Along the way he has been a member of the book committees for development of county heritage books about Madison, Morgan, Marshall, Lawrence, and Limestone counties of north Alabama. He likewise has written articles that were published in five other county heritage books and contributed to the Madison County bicentennial book, “A History of Early Settlement: Madison County Before Statehood, 1808-1819,” as published in The Huntsville Historical Review Special Issue in 2008. He has for about 15 years served as a volunteer digitizing historical records at the Madison County Records Center, the Tax Assessor's archive, and the Madison County Records Center, but lately has been concentrating upon the historical papers of Dr. Francis Roberts at the UAH Special Collections archive.
