Discovering Huntsville, AL with the Whole Family: A Multi-Generational Visit

Written by Melody Pittman of Wherever I May Roam

Imagine a weekend getaway that satisfies the curiosity of a five-year-old (Scarlett), the adventurous spirit of young adults (my daughters Taylor and Peyton, plus Blake, Taylor's hubby), and the refined tastes of a 55-year-old grandma (G-Ma, that's me!). Well, that's what our family experienced on a multigenerational road trip to Rocket City, USA—Huntsville, Alabama. From a world-famous rocket center to cool upcycled properties, this city offers something for every age group to enjoy. Here's a detailed itinerary of our memorable family getaway.

Friday Arrival and Artsy Adventures

Exploring Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment

Family at Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment

After a five-hour drive to Huntsville, our first stop was Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment. This repurposed factory is a haven for creativity with dozens of unique shops, local businesses, and even a cat adoption center. Scarlett, my granddaughter, was thrilled by the massive space to work off some energy, while Taylor and Blake enjoyed browsing through the eclectic mix of artwork and handmade goods.

We visited Piper & Leaf Tea Co for a quick pick-me-up. Their coffee and tea drinks are absolutely delightful, and the scones are out of this world.

Sweet Treats at Pizzelle's Confections

Though a former Lowe Mill occupant, Pizzelle's Confections, now at Campus 805, is where you'll find the sweetest treats in Huntsville. Their artisan chocolates are perfect for a late-night treat and trust me; you'll want to sample the Man on the Moon, Nutty by Nature, and Straight to Ale Stone Fruit Sour chocolates. They're divine!

Dinner Delights

Since we had been in the car for hours, we decided to split up for dinner. My son-in-law Blake, myself, and Peyton headed to Ol Heidelberg, an authentic German eatery with mouthwatering schnitzels, sausages, and King Ludwig Chicken. Make a reservation; this is a busy spot.

Meanwhile, Taylor and Scarlett opted for Melt in downtown Huntsville, which offers gourmet grilled sandwiches in a family-friendly atmosphere. Both meals were a hit!

Restful Night at Embassy Suites

Embassy Suites Pets

We spent the night at the Embassy Suites, a pet-friendly downtown hotel with a gorgeous lobby area that is easy to navigate. The spacious rooms, two TVs, and centralized bathroom made it comfortable for all of us. Plus, the indoor pool was a great way to unwind before bed.

Saturday Morning Bliss

Chocolate Gravy at Blue Plate Cafe

Our morning started with a bang—chocolate gravy at Blue Plate Cafe. This Saturday-only special features a buttered biscuit topped with homemade chocolate sauce. The line was long, but the wait was absolutely worth it.

Visit to Burritt on the Mountain

Burritt animal

Next, we headed to Burritt on the Mountain, a living history park, before it got too hot outside. Scarlett loved the gem mining, Rosenwald Schoolhouse, and hands-on activities, while all of us appreciated the barnyard animals and strolling through the historic buildings.

Kids can pick up a free scavenger hunt on their way in and turn it in after completing it for a small prize. Take advantage of the mansion tour and the incredible photo ops from the overlook. If you’re a more active family, you might enjoy a short hike just minutes away from Burritt on the Mountain at Monte Sano State Park.

Mexican Feast at Rosie's Mexican Cantina

We united over Mexican cuisine at Rosie's Mexican Cantina for lunch because who doesn't love Mexican food? Excellent chips and salsa, combined with colorful lights, made the ambiance fun for everyone.

Afternoon Fun at EarlyWorks Museum Complex and Campus 805

Children's Tree at EarlyWorks Museum

After lunch, Taylor and Scarlett explored the EarlyWorks Museum Complex, a great children's museum with plenty of interactive exhibits. The rest of us ventured to Campus 805, an upcycled property boasting killer breweries, a speakeasy, and charming shops.

Getting Up Close and Personal with Space

We reunited at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center for the 3 PM planetarium show, followed by some exploring around the rocket center. This time frame is great for the little ones, and our show was geared for kids to comprehend and be excited.

While the adults were more excited about the Saturn V gallery, Scarlett found her happy place at Spark!Lab, a hands-on invention workspace to indulge in the invention process. Our Rocket Center visit was educational and entertaining, perfect for Scarlett and the whole family.

Evening at Bridge Street Town Centre

Connor's Chicken

We returned to the hotel to rest and refresh before heading to Connors Steak & Seafood at Bridge Street Town Centre for dinner. This upscale restaurant has a casual vibe and a menu that pleases everyone, from burgers and steaks to pasta dishes.

After dinner, we strolled around the outdoor mall, which reminded me so much of Disney Springs. A few shops you might wish to check out are Magnolia Soap and Bath, Barnes & Noble, Shades, our favorite Orange Beach t-shirt shop, and oh so much more.

If your family's millennials want to enjoy Huntsville's nightlife, there are several options, such as The Nook and SiP, a speakeasy and cigar bar.

Sunday Morning Exploration

Complimentary Breakfast at Embassy Suites

We kicked off Sunday morning with a lovely complimentary breakfast at Embassy Suites. Cooked-to-order eggs, crispy bacon, and a self-serve Coca-Cola fountain were just what we needed to fuel up for the day.

Strolling Through Downtown Huntsville

Big Spring Park's ducks

We ventured on foot to explore downtown Huntsville. Our first stop was Big Spring International Park, where we fed ducks, geese, and koi. The murals and photo ops were perfect for capturing memories.

Whether you prefer to see a show at the Von Braun Center, visit the Huntsville Museum of Art (which has impressive kid spaces and exhibits), or wander through the Alabama Constitution Hall Historic Park & Museum, there's something for everyone.

For a caffeine fix, Cozy Cow is your go-to spot. They have delicious ice cream and snacks for the kids.

Final Stop at Huntsville Botanical Garden

Huntsville Botanical Garden

Before heading home, we visited my favorite spot, the Huntsville Botanical Garden. Here, you can learn a lot about gardening, herbs, art, and nature. Scarlett (and kids in general) really loved the Purdy Butterfly House and miniature train village.

With 112 acres of diverse ecosystems, there's plenty to explore and space to roam around and tire out before being cooped up in the car again.

Sweet Goodbye at Edgar's Bakery

On our way out, we stopped by Edgar's Bakery for some sweet treats to take home. Their cupcakes, cinnamon rolls, decorated sugar cookies, and signature iced shortbread are to die for—and make for a great snack on the ride home.
