The Huntsville Ballet Company returns to the Mark C. Smith Concert Hall with The Nutcracker December 9 - 11. HBC Company members and students from the Huntsville Ballet School perform in this beloved ballet classic reimagined and set in historic Huntsville in the Erskine family home on Christmas Eve.

Over the years Artistic Director Phillip Otto has added details and elements to the traditional ballet that make it unique to Huntsville and this year is no different. The addition of a Gypsy Band in place of the Spanish dancers is a nod to the Gypsy Queen reportedly buried in the Maple Hill Cemetery. These characters join Aunt Eunice and her Biscuits, the Stars that fell on Alabama and the Watercress Fairy. This year, Mr. Otto has commissioned a new backdrop for the Land of the Sweets from acclaimed set designer and artist Gregory Hill that conveys the colorful world of Laura Erskine’s dream.

Huntsville Ballet Company Principal Couple Sarah Pautz and Jayson Pescasio reprise the roles of the Sugar Plum Fairy and Cavalier. The performance features accompaniment by the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Joseph Lee.

The Nutcracker runs for four regular performances from December 9 through 11 at the Mark C. Smith Concert Hall of the Von Braun Center. Ticket prices range from $29 to $38. Purchase tickets by calling 256-539-0961, at Ticketmaster, The VBC Box Office, huntsvilleballetcompany.org, or in person at 800 Regal Dr.
