The holidays are here, and if you’re anything like me, you want a few good family photos that don’t feel too staged but still look like they belong on a Christmas card. Between daycare runs, shopping, and preparing for the holidays, finding time (and a photographer) can feel impossible.
If you waited until the last minute to book a Christmas photoshoot, don’t want to hire a photographer, or want to snap the perfect photos while you're visiting Huntsville, I’ve got you covered. Here are a few of my favorite spots around Huntsville to take DIY holiday photos.
These locations are perfect whether you want a Christmas-themed backdrop or timeless shots to hang on your walls all year long. Grab your phone, a tripod, and your favorite outfits and create some magic yourself.

Blevins Gap Nature Preserve
If you love that dreamy golden-hour glow, this is the spot. Blevins Gap gives you gorgeous mountain views and natural light, perfect for cozy family photos or couples’ shots in matching sweaters. It’s also great for non-themed photos if you’re going for something calm and classic. Bring a blanket and a few props to make your photos feel festive without going overboard.
Hays Nature Preserve
This one’s ideal for families with little ones. There’s space for the kids to run, trails for walking, and trees that create the perfect natural frame. If you’re like me, you know getting a toddler to say cheese is nearly impossible, so this is a great place for candids. Between the trees, benches, and shallow lake, you’ll have plenty of options at Hays Nature Preserve. The best photos are when you let the moments unfold, those unplanned smiles always end up being the favorites.
Huntsville Botanical Garden
Most people wouldn’t think to take their Christmas photos here, but it’s actually one of the most beautiful spots in the city. Huntsville Botanical Garden transforms during the holidays. The Galaxy of Lights is magical at night, but if you go during the day, you’ll find lush greenery with festive touches that make your pictures stand out. The possibilities are endless, from wide garden shots to close-ups surrounded by nature. Admission is required, but it’s worth it.

Downtown Huntsville and the Tinsel Trail
Downtown has a little bit of everything and truly captures that cozy, small-town Christmas vibe. The square is perfect for warm, classic photos, especially if you stop by one of the local coffee shops for a cup shot (its the perfect Pinterest holiday photo). Big Spring Park gives you endless options too, from the red bridge and waterfall steps to the murals that add a pop of color to your shots. And don’t forget the Tinsel Trail, it's one of the most festive stops in the city, especially if you’re wanting to get candid photos in the evening.
MidCity District
If your vibe is more modern and playful, MidCity is perfect. It’s not overly decorated for Christmas, which makes it great for timeless photos. Between the colorful murals and walkways near Tupelo Honey, you’ll find plenty of fun, urban-style backdrops. While you're there, hop on over to The Camp and check out their holiday decor. They typically have a holiday backdrop that’s fun for the entire family.
Bridge Street Town Centre
Bridge Street is practically made for holiday photos. Between the big Christmas tree, the carousel, and all the lights, it’s a festive dream. Go right before sunset to catch the lights coming on for that cozy evening glow, or visit midday to see the tree in all its glory.
It’s also a great spot to start a yearly family photo tradition since the same tree goes up every holiday season. Keep in mind, this is a Huntsville favorite, so allocate plenty of time as it is often busy. Once you’re done snapping pictures, you can grab something to eat or finish your shopping, it’s the perfect way to make a full afternoon out of it.
Serenity Luxe Studio
If you’d rather skip the outdoor chill but still want something festive, book a session at Serenity Luxe Studio. It’s a local content studio that creates stunning seasonal backdrops. You can rent the space by the hour, bring your own camera or phone, and capture beautiful photos in a styled, cozy environment, perfect for solo shoots, couples, or families. Whether you’re using your phone or a camera, remember it doesn’t take a professional to get great photos.
