Prepare to embark on a whimsical journey into the heart of nature as the Huntsville Botanical Garden unveils its latest marvel: the Mother Earth Troll Garden. Opening to the public on April 1, 2025, this enchanting exhibit is the brainchild of renowned Danish artist Thomas Dambo, celebrated globally for his larger-than-life troll sculptures crafted from recycled materials.
Meet Mama Zelda: The Guardian of the Garden
At the center of this magical realm sits Mama Zelda, an awe-inspiring 20-foot-tall troll sculpture. Seated in a serene lotus pose, Mama Zelda is more than a visual masterpiece; she embodies themes of sustainability and storytelling. Her head, hands, and feet were meticulously crafted in Dambo's Copenhagen workshop and transported to Huntsville, where her body was constructed using locally sourced, salvaged materials. This collaborative effort involved Dambo's team, the dedicated staff of the Huntsville Botanical Garden, and enthusiastic community volunteers.
An Interactive Maze of Wonder
Surrounding Mama Zelda is a living maze designed to ignite curiosity and adventure. Winding pathways lead visitors through a landscape rich with native plants, including thousands of trees, shrubs, and perennials that promise a vibrant display across all seasons. As you navigate the maze, keep an eye out for hidden surprises, such as a secret swing and cozy, shaded seating areas perfect for reflection and relaxation. The maze's structure, constructed from salvaged wood and other repurposed materials, underscores the garden's commitment to environmental stewardship.
A Testament to Sustainability and Community
The Mother Earth Troll Garden stands as a symbol of what can be achieved when art, nature, and community unite. The use of recycled materials not only brings Dambo's imaginative vision to life but also emphasizes the importance of sustainability. Local contractors and tree companies contributed to the project by donating boulders, large tree trunks, and other natural elements, ensuring that the garden reflects the unique character of the Huntsville area. In addition, more than 400 dedicated volunteers from the region came together to bring Dambo’s vision to life.
