There are so many perfect fall days in Huntsville and Madison County, but for me, one towers, literally, above the rest. Strolling the grounds at Monte Sano State Park while strands of music tangle through the trees, sipping a tea or coffee while discovering something new to behold at each turn.
Festival History
The Monte Sano Art Festival is one of my favorite events every year and has been calling the mountaintop home for almost three decades. Originally an artist-planned event and then a volunteer-led labor of love, the festival transferred to Arts Huntsville and has been able to grow and expand while continuing to delight and maintain its roots every year. In its beginnings, the festival was a one-day event, but with Arts Huntsville its expanded to two wonderful fall days.
Picture It
Picture it: strolling the winding paths, leaves crunching underneath, seeing artists that are old favorites as well as ones you’ve yet to experience. With around 140 artists taking part annually in the juried festival, the organizers do a great job maintaining old faithfuls while bringing in fresh viewpoints. Many artists are from the Southeast, but some do come from farther afield. Spending the morning walking with the pups and a coffee, and shopping for art is magical. It’s a reunion of sorts too, as I always run into so many people I know, and it’s fun to catch up while asking each other, “Did you see this artist?” or “Where did you find that?”
Art With a View
The festival boasts art with a view, and it delivers. Stunning views throughout the festival, of the art, of course, and at the overlooks. That mountain air and view does come with some surprises, as you never know exactly what weather is going to be like, so it’s best to prepare for everything. You may be cool in the morning and warm by the afternoon. I tend to dress in layers, and sensible, sturdy footwear is a must. I’ve attended in rain, sun, mist, fog, and mud-the artists are happy to see you regardless of the weather, and sometimes not-so-great weather makes the crowds a little more manageable.
Come Hungry
In addition to all the artists and live music, there’s also always a selection of yummy food vendors. Bring the whole family and make a day of it. Listen to music, shop the art, grab a bite to eat, and let the kids play on the playground -it’s truly fun for the whole family.
Art is for Everyone
Not a collector? No need to be. Art festivals like Monte Sano truly offer something for everyone and every level of art appreciator. Paintings, jewelry, photography, functional pottery-you can find something to beautify any part of your home, and buying directly from an artist is often more affordable, and certainly more unique, than picking up something at a big box store. It’s a great way to discover your personal tastes and then buy what you like, and you’ll never go wrong!
