History of Bellehouse:
In 1871, Mason Chapel Colored Methodist Episcopal (C.M.E) Church was organized at "Nubbin Ridge" in Limestone County. The church was named Cokesbury C.M.E. after the Methodist Hymnal.
The church later moved to Madison and is located on Sullivan and Bradley Street. It is storied to be the first African American church within the city limits. Bradley Street was named for Mother Mattie Bradley, one of Mason Chapel’s oldest and still active members. The church motto: “And yet we are alive to see each other's face”.
