Apple Picking at Scott’s Orchard
Is there anything more fall than picking apples and sipping cider? Strolling the orchards with a wagon and munching on cider doughnuts is the perfect outdoor activity as the weather starts to cool.
Scott’s Orchard in Hazel Green is the spot to go in Madison County for rows of apple trees and a farm store packed with goodies. They’ve turned the activity into a whole experience, with pick-your-own apples, farm tours, and spots to enjoy your fried pies, ice cream, and apple slushies outdoors. Apple picking is usually open from mid-September through mid-October.
Camping at Monte Sano State Park
Looking for a way to spend the whole weekend outdoors in Huntsville? Monte Sano State Park is the spot!
The park has more than 100 campsites, including primitive tent spots, premium RV hook-ups, and water and electric pads for campers or tents. During the day, you can hit the trails for a hike or bike ride, and then keep the outdoor fun going after dark with hot dogs and s’mores at the fire pit. If you’re into vibes but a little too bougie to sleep on the ground, the park also has Timberline Glamping Safari Tents and cabins for rent.
Picnic at Madison County Nature Trail
The Madison County Nature Trail is one of the prettiest fall leaf-peeping spots in Huntsville, when the trees around the lake start turning to shades of orange and yellow. The park has a forested walking path around the water that makes for a colorful autumn hike.
It’s also a great spot for a picnic! There are lots of tables under a covered picnic pavilion and in the open air, shaded by the tree canopy. Or, take your picnic to a more private spot along the trail, where you’ll find scattered benches and rocks to perch on and enjoy the view.
Scarecrow Trail at Huntsville Botanical Garden
Huntsville Botanical Garden is the perfect spot to get outdoors in Huntsville in the fall, with lots of different ways to enjoy nature throughout the season. The garden’s FestiFall experience includes a few different special events, but visit on any day in September or October to enjoy the Scarecrow Trail, with decorative displays adding a little flair along the walking paths.
Outdoor Movies at Big Spring Park
One of the best free fall activities in Huntsville, Movies in the Park is held on Friday evenings in October in Big Spring Park downtown. The line-up usually includes a blend of kid-friendly flicks and Halloween vibes. It’s a fun way to spend an evening outdoors – just bring lawn chairs or a blanket and grab a food truck dinner picnic from one of the onsite vendors.
Pumpkin Farm at Tate Farms
Throughout October, Tate Farms in Meridianville transforms into a fall dream, with hay rides, a corn maze, and a produce market. Aptly called “Pumpkin Farm,” the experience opens at the end of September and lasts through the Pumpkin Destruction Day on Halloween.
It’s a great way to spend a day outdoors picking pumpkins, munching on funnel cakes, and listening to live music. There are also lots of games and rides for kids, including a corn cribs, a play barn, a farm-themed carousel, and apple cannons.
Sunflower Picking at Hubert Family Farms
After making a name for themselves as a North Alabama’s tulip destination in spring, Hubert Family Farms in New Market is ready for autumn. The farm’s Fall Flower Festival opened in mid-September, with pick-your-own fields of sunflowers, marigolds, zinnias, and cosmos. It’s a stunning spot to take fall photos and build beautiful bouquets while enjoying the outdoors.
Views at Burritt on the Mountain
With some of the best views in the city, Burritt on the Mountain is full of fall outdoor activities in Huntsville. A local favorite, the Cocktails at the View event on Wednesday evenings through October is a great chance to enjoy the scenery. Or, visit during daytime hours to walk around the historic park and barnyard and hike the nature trails.
