Monte Sano State Park

Camp at Monte Sano State Park

Spring break in Huntsville is the perfect time for a camping trip in Monte Sano State Park, since March and April temperatures are usually pleasant for enjoying the outdoors. The park is only about 5 miles from downtown Huntsville, but feels worlds away when you step out on the 20 miles of hiking trails.

For a traditional camping experience, reserve one of the campsites for tents or RVs that come with a fire pit and access to a bathhouse. Or, upgrade the experience by booking a Glamping Safari Tent with Timberline Glamping that comes with real beds, coffee makers, outlets, mini fridges, and other amenities to up the cozy factor. The park also has cabins built in the 1930s with stunning views from their position on a bluff.

Space & Rocket Center

Spring in Huntsville brings blooming flowers and trees, so this is a great time to check out the Huntsville Botanical Garden. The 118-acre property holds woodland paths, ponds, meadows, floral displays, and the one-of-a-kind Mother Earth Troll Garden by artist Thomas Dambo. Check the event calendar for special spring activities like gardening for kids and Nature Academy classes.

Hubert Family Farms - Tulips

The event takes place at Hubert Family Farms over a few weeks in March (the exact dates depend on blooming conditions). With a ticket or season pass, you can stroll through the colorful rows of flowers, pick stems, and snap photos. On weekends, there is often special markets, food trucks, and entertainment on-site as well.

Burritt Views

Visit Burritt on the Mountain

Step back in time this spring break at Burritt on the Mountain. The 167-acre attraction on Round Top Mountain has one of the best views in town, with a historic park, mansion, barnyard, and trails on site. Chapman Mountain hiking trail

Take a Hike

With 80-plus miles of trails in 10 nature preserves, the Land Trust of North Alabama offers some of the best spots to get outdoors during spring break in Huntsville. Nine of these parks are in Madison County, so you don’t have to wander far to find a trail. Bethel Springs Nature Preserve and Green Mountain Nature Preserve are both great for spring waterfall hikes, and Chapman Mountain Nature Preserve is great for families with some shorter loops, a picnic pavilion, the Big Tree Tour, and a bird blind for spotting winged critters on the Alabama Birding Trail.

Ride the Rails

If you’re looking for Huntsville spring break activities for kids, you can’t go wrong with a train ride. Head to the North Alabama Railroad Museum just outside of Huntsville for special excursions in March and April like the “Peter Cottontail Eggs-press” and the “Spring Fling Special.” Be sure to book in advance, as the train rides usually sell out.

You can also take train-loving kiddos to downtown Madison for the Trains on Main Scavenger Hunt. Using clue cards, families can hunt for eight bronze trains downtown and then check in at the Madison Chamber of Commerce for a special prize.
